November 7th marks National Notary Public Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the remarkable history and contributions of Notaries Public in the United States.
In honor of this day let’s take a moment to recognize Notaries who have made significant contributions to important events throughout history.
Historical Milestones and Notary Contributions
Notaries have been important throughout history as reliable witnesses to key events. Their role dates back many years. For instance, Notary Rodrigo de Escobedo documented Christopher Columbus's landing in 1492 for Spain.
In founding the United States, Notary Thomas McKean was crucial in supporting Delaware’s independence. Nathaniel Gorham also signed the U.S. Constitution as a Notary.
These examples show that Notaries not only confirm events but also help protect important historical values.
Notaries Who Made History
Throughout history, many different people have worked as Notaries. One unexpected Notary was Mark Twain, the famous author known for his humor and social insights.
Twain served as a Notary Public in Nevada when he was younger, showing how diverse those in this profession can be.
Texas has also had its share of notable Notaries. Charles Bellinger Tate Stewart, who created the “Lone Star” flag, and Judge Roy Bean, known as the “Law West of the Pecos,” are examples of unique individuals who have shaped the role of Notaries.
These figures highlight how Notaries have influenced American culture and identity.
The Notary’s Role in Modern Society
Notaries Public continue to uphold the integrity of legal documents and transactions.
With new technology, Notaries also offer remote online notarizations (RON). This allows people to access their services online securely and easily, without losing safety.
The NNA supports Notaries by providing training, advocacy, and resources, ensuring they can meet the changing needs of society.
